Using your own domain means that you will have your own address on internet. Now this address will not contain the "Blogspot.com" in it.
This is web address like "www.mysite.com" or www.yourblog.net like things.
This can be done in two steps
By using the blogger function Setting>Basic>Blog address> add a custom domain.
The second step is to buy the domain directly through domain registrar. This step is only for that time when you required a domain and it is not available in blogger function or you don't have a credit card.
This step is for getting your website do not look like a blog because when people search in google or some other search engines they ignores the blogs thinking of unprofessional and they give preference to website .
Tip: I will suggest you to turn on this custom domain at beginning of your blog if you are thinking of this because all the later steps are totally based on the custom domain name rather than re-directions.This is also A Good thing for SEO which rather may be important for you at start but later on it will be.
