Syntax highlighter widely used in WordPress Blogging platform. This is a feature of text editors that are used for programming, scripting, or markup languages. The feature displays text, especially code snippets, in different colors and fonts according to the category of terms in content.
Syntax Highlighter mainly used for spicing up the looking of the code scripts and it also help to easily identify the code line thus users easily can find the code. In Blogger platform we used to use blockquote for highlighting the code block. But its time to change, come out from old school and go ahead for new things.
The major benefits of using Syntax Highlighter are as follows-
- You will able to display code snippets in different color
- Line numbering will help to identify the specific code easily.
- You will able to isolate and show up CSS, HTML, Jquery and JavaScript in different colored box.
- Syntax Highlighter is lightweight, robust, elegant syntax highlighting
The main disadvantage of Syntax Highlighter for Blogger user is that they have to do many manual works. Because every time you have to convert the code snippets for using and presenting on Blog posts. Converting means you have to use a Pre code parser tools. Luckily I have already added this tool in my Blog so you can use it. The reason why we had to manually encode the code was so Blogger doesnt render the output.
Though pros and cons are relative factor but we can spice up our Blog by using this widget. So directly I am going to the tutorial. Before that you should the origin of this script. Because I am not the original developer of this Prism Syntax highlighter widget. This widget has developed by Lea Verou and her site URL is http://lea.verou.meand I just modified it for using in Blogger. But this widget already released by many developers but in different format and style just like below.
Step 1 Log in to your Blogger account and Go to your Blogger Dashboard
Step 2 Click on -> Template -> Edit HTML
Step 3 Now find </body> or </head> by Pressing Ctrl+F (Windows) or CMD+F (Mac)
Step 4 And Paste the below codes one by one above/before </body> or </head>
<style type='text/css'>

</script>
Step 5 Now simply hit the Save template button. Dont think that job has done. Because we will now
do some manual works to display the scripts through Prism Syntax highlighter. Because without converting the code snippets you wont able to display it in your Blog posts. Generally we can display the code snippets of CSS, HTML, JavaScript and Jquery so I have created 4 pre titles for denoting the language is this.
<pre title="HTML" data-codetype ="HTML"><code class="language-markup"> ... Your HTML (already escaped) put here ... </code></pre>
<pre title="CSS" data-codetype ="CSS"><code class="language-css"> ... Your CSS put here ... </code></pre>
<pre title="Javascript" data-codetype ="JavaScript"><code class="language-javascript"> ... Your JavaScript put here ... </code></pre>
<pre title="jQuery" data-codetype ="JQuery"><code class="language-javascript"> ... Your jQuery put here ... </code></pre>
So for displaying HTML you have to use first language markup. I am showing you an example for displaying HTML language markup. Suppose your HTML code script is like below and you want to display it in your Blog post.
<div class="review-circle">Hardware<span>8</span></div><div class="rev-value-outer"><div class="rev-value" data-value="8" style="width:80%"></div></div></div>
Now go to my pre code Parser tool by visiting http://www.bloggerspice.com/p/pre-code-parser.html URL and copy the above code and paste it in pre code parser.
After that press the Conversion button from the bottom. Now the script will be like below-
<i rel="pre"><div class="review-item"><div class="review-circle">Hardware<span>8</span></div><div class="rev-value-outer"><div class="rev-value" data-value="8" style="width:80%"></div></div></div></i>
Now this parsed code you have to wrap up by CSS language markup. This will be exactly like below-
<pre title="HTML" data-codetype ="HTML"><code class="language-markup">
<div class="review-item"><div class="review-circle">Hardware<span>8</span></div><div class="rev-value-outer"><div class="rev-value" data-value="8" style="width:80%"></div></div></div></code></pre>
In the above code I have removed
<i rel="pre"> </i>
Now your script is ready to use in Blogger template. And I will show you how to use this in Blogger template.
How to Display Prism syntax highlighting script in Blog Post?
This is very simple. Because we know to display any HTML script we have to switch to HTML view from Compose view in Blog Post. So while you create a new post then from Post Editor Select HTML view from Compose view. Now add the parsed script and switch to Compose view for publishing the content.
Thats it. Now check your recently published content and see code snippets are displaying with Prism syntax highlighting style. For any further help feel free to leave a comment below. Thank you. Happy Blogging!!!
